Regulations
Good to know before you ask
Lead-based paint was banned for housing in 1978. In older homes, deteriorating paint and dust from renovation are the main sources of exposure, especially dangerous for young children and pregnant women.
Inspections and risk assessments are done by professionals certified by EPA or an authorized state. Renovators working on pre-1978 homes must follow the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule. We do not perform inspections ourselves and do not show prices.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an inspection and a risk assessment?
An inspection tells you where lead-based paint is. A risk assessment tells you whether there are lead hazards now, such as peeling paint or lead dust, and how to control them.
Is lead testing required when selling a home?
Federal rules require sellers and landlords of pre-1978 housing to disclose known lead paint and to give buyers a chance to test. Some cities require more.
Do contractors need a certification?
Yes. Paid renovation of pre-1978 homes is covered by the EPA RRP rule: firms must be certified and follow lead-safe practices.
